And Then We Do Harm: Rethinking Clinical Interventions for Survivors of Domestic Violence
Price:
$9.99, Available on Amazon
And Then We Do Harm
When 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States will experience domestic violence, odds are several of your clients will be affected. Unfortunately mental health professionals do not receive the education needed to work with this population and the trauma treatments we are trained in can cause harm if modifications are not made. This book provides information on the modifications needed while working with victims and survivors of domestic violence, as well as basic education that all mental health professionals need to work with this population.
  • What common myths are interfering with clinical work?
  • How might my trauma modality affect court testimony?
  • Can couples work be the right fit for couples dealing with domestic violence?
  • What can I do as a clinician to make sure that I am providing the best care for these clients?
And Then We Cause Harm: Rethinking Clinical Interventions for Survivors of Domestic Violence will shed a light on the falsely believed notions that trauma is trauma.

Unfortunately in the typical counseling or social work programs there is little taught about the judicial system, especially around issues that arise when working with these victims and survivors. • Understanding of basic legal information and situations your client may experience
  • Understanding the differences between criminal and civil court and issues your client may experience with both
  • Understanding of the current research and climate of the legal system that affect victims and survivors of domestic violence
  • Understanding of your role as their clinician or caseworker
  • Some steps you can take to support your clients navigate their experiences with the legal system

The Thin Line: Assessing for Domestic Violence in Couples Therapy
Date: Upcoming dates to be determined.  Contact us to receive notifications of the next session.
Yelling Couple
Couples therapists are on the front lines of assessing for and appropriately handling cases of domestic violence. It is contraindicated to continue providing couples therapy when there is domestic violence present; however, there can be power and control dynamics used within many couples that do not fit the criteria for domestic violence. Do you feel confident in assessing these dynamics with your couple clients? When you determine that there is coercive control and violence within one of your couples do you feel confident in what to do next?

This training will have an education-based/didactic component as well as an interactive/group component to best learn how to incorporate the knowledge learned into your work with your clients. By attending this training, you will learn:
  • The research and contraindications of providing couples therapy when domestic violence is present
  • The red flag behaviors and nuances that domestic violence is present within the couple
  • To identify the level of power and control dynamics to determine if couples therapy is contraindicated
  • The differences between situational violence between couples and true use of domestic violence tactics to gain and maintain power and control over an intimate partner
  • Ways to get out of the counseling relationship in an ethical way while managing the victim clients' safety if domestic violence is present

There will be a lot of information shared at this training. While there will be an interactive component, it may be beneficial to receive supervision or consultation around this issue to put the knowledge into practice.
